Badik tumbuk lado is a traditional weapon of Kepulauan Riau. Badik is also a name of traditional weapon of Bugis ethnic and some ethnics in Sumatra. While, Tumbuk Lada or Tumbuk Lado is a weapon name used by people of Malay and Malay peninsula. Therefore, Badik Tumbuk Lada resembles traditional weapon of other Malay Peninsula ethics and even Malaysia. Many ethnics inhabit Kepulauan Riau, but the majority is Malay, hence Riau culture and the culture of other region occupied by Malay people are alike.
Badik tumbuk lado is a dagger 27 – 29 cm long and 2,5 – 4 cm wide. Jamb

This is the result of the spread of Malay ethnic in Indonesia, Malaysia, Filipina, Vietnam and Malay peninsula. As keris, Badik is also a Malay identity.

There is no record with regard to the first use of Badik Tumbuk Lado by Malay people. However, it is known that Badik Tumbuk Lada has been used for self-defense and hunting as far back, and else, Badik also used as wedding dress accessories. It represent the gently and power of man. Unlike keris, which is associated with Malay ethnic unifying device, Badik is a symbol of courage.
Thus far, Badik Tumbuk Lado is used daily by people of Kepulaiuan Riau for farming and hunting. Some local customs also preserves Badik as men dress accessories. Nowadays, Badik is no longer used in battle as there are more advanced weapon.
